Four military sources gave that figure to Reuters on Monday, Nov. 2, in a report [carried by Al-Monitor](https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2026/11/yemens-houthis-advance-within-80-km-aden-sources-say). It is the closest the group has come to the city since the early months of the 2015 war. Its fighters briefly entered Aden that year before being driven out.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"The advance runs through Lahj governorate, which borders Aden to the north and west. According to the Reuters sources, the Houthis attacked government positions in al-Maqatirah district on about Oct. 30 and took the whole district within three days. By Monday they were fighting at a military camp at the entrance to Tur al-Bahah district, roughly 50 kilometers from the Lahj provincial capital. The mountains there overlook the road between Taiz and Aden. That road is the last link between government-held territory and Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, which has been under siege since early October.\n\nThe Houthis call their forces the Yemeni armed forces; the government calls them a militia backed by Iran. This story uses \"Houthis,\" the name of the movement's founding family, and attributes each side's claims to the side making them. Our earlier report on [the spread of fighting from al-Jawf to Taiz](https://567politics.com/news/yemen-fighting-al-jawf-taiz-lahij-houthis-saudi-airports-november-2026) covers the opening weeks of this front.\n\n## Where the front line is\n\nThe Institute for the Study of War and the Critical Threats Project are two Washington think tanks that track the conflict from open sources. They published a geolocated account in their [Iran Update of Nov. 2](https://www.criticalthreats.org/analysis/iran-update-november-2-2026). By their reading of footage, Houthi fighters advanced southeast from Hayjat al-Abd on Nov. 1 and captured Souq al-Rabouh, a crossroads leading north into Taiz's al-Shamayatayn district. On Nov. 2 they took mountain positions in al-Maqatirah overlooking Tur al-Bahah. They also captured Jabal Irf, which overlooks the last government-controlled sections of the Taiz-Aden road. The analysts assess that the Houthis \"likely aim to seize more of the Taiz-Aden\" supply line, \"which would set conditions to besiege or capture Aden City later.\" They also note that the group \"may struggle to consolidate their gains in exposed terrain\" under government and Saudi air power.\n\nThe government describes the same ground differently. Asharq Al-Awsat, a Saudi-owned paper, [reported on Nov. 3](https://english.aawsat.com/arab-world/5337139-bab-al-mandeb-close-liberation-houthis-intensify-fighting-lahj) that National Resistance units repelled pre-dawn Houthi attacks in al-Maqatirah on Monday and Tuesday. It said government forces shelled Houthi positions in the Sawalihah mountains and that the Houthis' aim was to break through toward Tur al-Baha. Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi issued decrees reorganizing the Tur al-Baha axis command and the Taiz front, the paper said. The Reuters sources, by contrast, said the Houthis had already taken all of al-Maqatirah. Both accounts can be true of different days; neither can be checked from outside Yemen tonight.\n\n**From the Red Sea coast to the approaches of Aden, 2026**\n\n* **2026-02-28**: US and Israeli strikes on Iran open the wider war\n* **2026-07-13**: Saudi-led coalition strikes Sanaa airport runway, its first since the 2022 truce\n* **2026-09-03**: Houthis begin an offensive down the Red Sea coast toward Bab el-Mandeb\n* **2026-10-04**: Alimi announces the \"Dawn of Yemen\" counteroffensive\n* **2026-10-06**: Houthis cut the last government road into Taiz\n* **2026-10-10**: Houthi drones hit Riyadh's airport, killing 13\n* **2026-10-15**: Missiles strike the presidential palace in Aden\n* **2026-10-30**: Houthi assault on al-Maqatirah begins\n* **2026-11-02**: Fighting at the Tur al-Bahah camp, 80 km from Aden\n\nSource: [Reuters via Al-Monitor](https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2026/11/yemens-houthis-advance-within-80-km-aden-sources-say), [Critical Threats Project](https://www.criticalthreats.org/analysis/iran-update-november-2-2026), [Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/4/yemens-leader-announces-military-operation-to-retake-houthi-held-territory)\n\nThe dates above come from the sources linked in the diagram and from the Wikipedia timelines of [the year in Yemen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_in_Yemen) and [the October attacks on Saudi airports](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2026_Houthi_attacks_on_Saudi_Arabian_airports). Those pages cite wire reports. We treat them as a guide to sequence, not as primary evidence.\n\n## Who is fighting whom\n\nThis is not a two-sided war. The Houthis, formally Ansar Allah, hold Sanaa and most of the populated north. The government they drove out in 2014 is now run by the Presidential Leadership Council under Alimi, with Shaya al-Zindani as prime minister since January. In January 2026 that government, with Saudi air support, took Aden back from the Southern Transitional Council, the separatist movement that had controlled the city. It expelled the STC's leader, Aidarus al-Zubaidi, from the council, as [NBC News reported at the time](https://www.nbcnews.com/world/middle-east/yemen-anti-houthi-council-expels-separatist-leader-says-faces-treason-rcna252734). So the forces defending Aden today are a coalition: northern-led government units, the National Resistance of Tariq Saleh, the Southern Giants Brigades and the Saudi-trained Nation's Shield. They fight without the southern movement that held the city for years.\n\nZubaidi, from exile, called in an Oct. 13 address for a \"general popular mobilization to defend the south\" against the Houthis while repeating his demand for a separate southern state, according to the southern outlet [South24](https://south24.net/news/newse.php?nid=5790). We found no STC statement on the Lahj advance itself.\n\nSaudi Arabia is the government's main backer and is itself under attack. The coalition's spokesman, Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki, said on Nov. 3 that a Houthi drone aimed at the kingdom's southern region was \"intercepted and destroyed,\" per the [Saudi Press Agency](https://www.spa.gov.sa/en/N2717547). Iran denies directing the Houthis. Its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said on Nov. 3 that talks with Saudi Arabia were ongoing. He said Tehran wants regional security arrangements without foreign military involvement, Reuters reported [via ThePrint](https://theprint.in/world/irans-foreign-minister-says-talks-with-saudi-arabia-are-ongoing-yemen-fighting-intensifies/3088996/). The United States has not struck Yemen in 2026; its last strikes ended with a ceasefire in May 2025. The State Department said on Oct. 10 that \"the United States stands firmly with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against Houthi terrorism,\" [CBS News reported](https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/iran-war-trump-us-elections-saudi-arabia-yemen-houthis/), and Trump said the same day that the U.S. \"may\" join Saudi strikes. Our coverage of [the Doha talks on the wider Iran war](https://567politics.com/news/iran-doha-talks-draft-proposal-hormuz-plan-november-2026) describes the diplomacy in which Yemen is one front, and our report on [the U.S. strikes on Qeshm Island](https://567politics.com/news/us-limited-strikes-qeshm-island-iran-defensive-vance-progress-november-2026) covers the latest exchange in the Gulf itself.\n\n## What each side says is happening\n\nThe Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said on the evening of Nov. 2 that Saudi aircraft had carried out 109 strikes in the previous 24 hours on \"civilian objects\" in Saada, Taiz, Lahj, al-Jawf and Hodeidah. He put the total since the escalation at 3,939 airstrikes and missile attacks. He also claimed two drone attacks on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and a \"direct hit\" on an early-warning radar in Jizan, according to the Houthi-aligned [Yemen Press Agency](https://en.ypagency.net/410796) and [Dawn](https://www.dawn.com/news/2041648/houthis-claim-attacks-on-jizan-dammam-airports-in-saudi-arabia). Saudi officials did not confirm the airport claims. The Houthi-run health ministry said 17 people were killed in Yemen over two days, most of them children, AFP reported [via Gulf News](https://gulfnews.com/world/gulf/saudi/saudi-forces-say-intercepted-drone-as-yemens-houthis-announce-17-killed-in-two-days-1.500734033). On Nov. 3, Saree denied that any Houthi attack on Saudi territory had taken place that day.\n\nThe government says the Houthis are the ones hitting civilians. Its health ministry said a ballistic missile struck a health center in al-Mudaribah district of Lahj on Nov. 2, killing five people, including three medical staff, and wounding 15, according to Asharq Al-Awsat. Prime Minister Zindani called it a \"full-fledged terrorist crime.\" A pro-government rights group counted 28 civilians killed and 57 injured in Taiz and Lahj over 48 hours. The Houthis did not immediately comment. The government's interior minister said 21 Iranian and Hezbollah advisers are working with the Houthis across six governorates. None of these figures can be verified independently, and the two sides' casualty counts do not describe the same events.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"htmltable","html":"<table><tr><th>Claim</th><th>Who says it</th><th>Verification</th></tr><tr><td>109 Saudi strikes in 24 hours; 3,939 since escalation</td><td>Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree</td><td>Not confirmed by Saudi Arabia; totals unaudited</td></tr><tr><td>Drone hits on Dammam airport and Jizan radar</td><td>Houthi spokesman</td><td>Saudi Arabia did not confirm</td></tr><tr><td>Health center strike in Lahj: 5 killed, 15 wounded</td><td>Yemen government health ministry</td><td>Houthis did not comment</td></tr><tr><td>21 IRGC and Hezbollah experts with the Houthis</td><td>Yemen interior minister</td><td>No independent confirmation; Iran denies a role</td></tr></table>","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"Sources: [Yemen Press Agency](https://en.ypagency.net/410796), [Dawn](https://www.dawn.com/news/2041648/houthis-claim-attacks-on-jizan-dammam-airports-in-saudi-arabia), [Asharq Al-Awsat](https://english.aawsat.com/arab-world/5337139-bab-al-mandeb-close-liberation-houthis-intensify-fighting-lahj), [Saudi Press Agency](https://www.spa.gov.sa/en/N2717547).\n\nEarlier battlefield claims follow the same pattern. The government spokesman said on Oct. 31 that its forces had \"neutralised\" about 336 Houthi fighters and destroyed 112 vehicles in a matter of hours, [Al Jazeera reported](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/31/new-yemen-fighting-displaces-290000-says-un-with-pregnant-women-at-risk). The Houthi leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, said in late October that reports of a siege on Taiz were \"Saudi-fabricated claims\" and that food was moving freely, AP reported [via Yahoo News](https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/yemen-besieged-taiz-famine-governor-185008801.html). The United Nations, which has staff on the ground, says otherwise.\n\n## The humanitarian picture\n\nThe International Organization for Migration counted 300,391 people displaced since the escalation began, 299,335 of them between early August and Oct. 31, according to figures reported on Nov. 2 by [South24](https://south24.net/news/newse.php?nid=5841) and [Arab News](https://www.arabnews.com/middle-east/300000-people-displaced-as-fighting-rages-in-western-yemen-3009279). About 45% of the newly displaced are in Taiz, 24% in Lahj and 19% in Aden. Those three governorates are exactly where the current fighting is. The UN's humanitarian office said on Nov. 2 that nearly 300,000 people had been displaced since early August, on top of 5.2 million displaced before the summer, [UN News reported](https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/11/1168723). All roads into Taiz were closed, with no commercial supplies entering. Nearly 250,000 people there had lost access to essential health care, including 186,000 children under five. More than 1,400 cases of acute diarrhea or suspected cholera were recorded in one week.\n\n**Where Yemenis displaced since August 2026 have fled from**\n\nShare of about 299,000 people newly displaced between early August and Oct. 31, 2026, by governorate of displacement, per IOM figures.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"htmltable","html":"<table><tr><th>Governorate</th><th>Share</th></tr><tr><td>Taiz</td><td>45%</td></tr><tr><td>Lahj</td><td>24%</td></tr><tr><td>Aden</td><td>19%</td></tr></table>","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"Source: [IOM figures via South24](https://south24.net/news/newse.php?nid=5841), [Arab News](https://www.arabnews.com/middle-east/300000-people-displaced-as-fighting-rages-in-western-yemen-3009279)\n\nThe World Food Programme warned on Oct. 14 that 800,000 people, including more than 600,000 in Taiz, had been cut off from its assistance, in [its statement](https://www.wfp.org/news/wfp-warns-escalating-yemen-conflict-cutting-life-saving-assistance-city-taiz). Ten of Taiz's 16 districts were already classified in IPC Phase 4, the \"emergency\" level one step below famine. Nationwide, WFP said, \"more than 18 million people face acute food insecurity.\" Taiz's governor, Nabil Shamsan, told the AP on Oct. 29 that \"the city is in famine, not on the brink of it.\" That is a political declaration, not a formal IPC famine classification. The IPC's June 2026 analysis covered only government-held areas, because the Houthis blocked data collection in theirs. It projected 1.8 million people in Phase 4 for October to December, per the [joint FAO, WFP and UNICEF statement](https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/news/2026/06/mil-260603-wfp01.htm). In Lahj, the deputy governor told Oxfam's local officer on Nov. 3 that \"tens of thousands of families\" had moved from al-Subaiha. Needs \"have exceeded the capacity of local responders,\" he said, per the government's [Saba news agency](https://www.sabanew.net/story/en/155128).\n\nThe UN's emergency relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, said on Nov. 2 that \"civilians must not be held hostage to the conflict,\" [Yemen Monitor reported](https://www.yemenmonitor.com/en/Details/ArtMID/908/ArticleID/186751). Water production in Taiz was down by half and basic food prices were up at least 50%, he said. The UN was still seeking the release of 70 detained staff. The UN envoy, Hans Grundberg, told the Security Council on Oct. 9 that \"Yemen has slid back into full-scale war,\" in [his briefing](https://osesgy.unmissions.org/en/news/briefing-by-the-un-special-envoy-for-yemen-hans-grundberg-to-the-security-council-3). We found no envoy statement on the Lahj advance.\n\n## What the advance would mean\n\nAden matters for three reasons. It is the seat of the government, the base from which the Saudi-backed coalition runs the war in the south, and the country's main southern port. The Houthis struck the presidential palace there on Oct. 15, killing five. They hit the airport on Oct. 16 and again on Oct. 28, after warning residents to leave, according to [Al Jazeera](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/10/17/iran-backed-houthis-strike-yemens-aden-what-that-means) and Reuters. Fly Aden suspended service through Nov. 8 and Yemenia limited itself to daytime flights, the Yemen analyst Mohammed Elsoukkary reported in [a briefing note](https://thotharis.substack.com/p/briefing-note-14-yemen-2-november).\n\nThe think-tank analysts do not predict an assault on the city. Their assessment is that the Houthis want the Taiz-Aden road, which would both complete the encirclement of Taiz and open the option of a later siege of Aden. Nadwa Dawsari, a Yemeni analyst at the Middle East Institute in Washington, argued in October that the Houthis \"are already overextended, as government forces pick up the pace on several fronts,\" [in a post on X](https://x.com/Ndawsari/status/2106580863551209636). The government did take ground in al-Jawf in the north last week, with what the Critical Threats analysts believe was Saudi helicopter support. Whether the Houthis can hold exposed mountain positions in Lahj under air attack is the open military question.\n\n## The arguments\n\nThe government and Saudi Arabia argue that the Houthis are an Iranian proxy. They say the group broke the 2022 truce, attacked civilian airports in the kingdom and now threatens the one city where the state still functions. Alimi's \"Dawn of Yemen\" operation, announced Oct. 4, aims to restore \"the authority of the state and its institutions over the entire national territory,\" by Al Jazeera's account of his address. The Saudi spokesman has called the Riyadh airport attack a \"full-fledged war crime.\" Riyadh has also been building a wider security network; our story on [Turkey's vote on the Mecca defense pact](https://567politics.com/news/turkey-parliament-mecca-defense-pact-vote-saudi-pakistan-party-positions-november-2026) explains the Saudi-Turkish-Pakistani arrangement.\n\nThe Houthis argue that they are defending Yemen against a Saudi air campaign that has hit markets, factories and a medical school. They say their attacks on Saudi airports are retaliation under a rule of \"blockade for blockade.\" They cast the war as part of a wider confrontation with the United States and Israel over Iran and Gaza. Their leader has called siege reports fabricated.\n\nThe southern movement argues that the north-led government cannot defend the south and that only a separate southern state will. Humanitarian agencies argue that whoever wins the road, the people of Taiz and Lahj are paying for it now. They say both sides are blocking aid, detaining staff and hitting civilian sites.\n\nThe United States and Iran each say the other is the destabilizer. Washington stands \"firmly\" with Riyadh and has a naval blockade of Iran in place; Tehran says it has no role in Houthi operations and wants a regional arrangement without foreign forces. Iranian-origin weapons in Houthi hands have been documented in UN Panel of Experts reports over several years. The specific claim of 21 advisers in six governorates is the government's and is unverified.\n\n## What polls say\n\nThere is no representative polling of Yemenis on the current fighting, and we are not aware of any that could be conducted under these conditions. For Americans, the nearest data is a Chicago Council on Global Affairs flash poll fielded May 2 to 4, 2025, among 1,026 adults, with a 3.2-point margin of error. In it, 46% supported and 44% opposed U.S. airstrikes on Houthi targets to address attacks on shipping, per [the council's release](https://globalaffairs.org/research/public-opinion-survey/just-half-americans-support-airstrikes-against-houthis). That is 18 months old and asked about a different campaign. A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,282 Americans taken Feb. 28 to March 1, 2026, found 27% approving of the strikes on Iran that opened the wider war and 43% disapproving, [GV Wire reported](https://gvwire.com/2026/03/01/just-27-of-americans-support-us-strikes-on-iran-reuters-ipsos-poll/). We found no Saudi polling. Nothing below should be read as what Yemenis, Saudis or Americans think.\n\n## What people are saying online\n\nReddit's listings were blocked from our systems overnight, so we could not sample r/worldnews or any other subreddit. X could not be opened directly. The posts below were found through search-engine indexes of x.com, and we have not verified them beyond the indexed text. They are a selection, not a sample, and most of the loudest accounts on this war are outside Yemen.\n\nAmong accounts credibly inside the country, Wasl News, a pro-government Yemeni outlet, [reported](https://x.com/waslnew/status/2107205350470402076) in October that the Houthis had cut the Taiz-Aden road after seizing al-Safiyah. Hussain Albukhaiti, a Sanaa-based journalist who supports the Houthis, [relayed](https://x.com/HussainBukhaiti/status/2112230736912961705) Saree's statement that attacks on Saudi Arabia were \"in response to the brutal Saudi aggression targeting our country and our people.\" A user posting as Khadija, who appears to be in Taiz though we cannot confirm her location, [shared](https://x.com/de_doa2/status/2116569039203930165) images of the Hayjat al-Abd road after airstrikes and warned that \"other images being circulated are AI-generated.\" Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani, an official, [alleged](https://x.com/ERYANIM/status/2115580269050663164) Houthi use of shells \"suspected of containing prohibited toxic substances,\" a claim we could not verify and that no independent body has confirmed.\n\nAmong the diaspora and foreign accounts, Dawsari, the Middle East Institute analyst, [wrote](https://x.com/Ndawsari/status/2112113864334807057) that Taiz's governor had called her and said \"the Houthis are shelling over our heads 24 hours a day.\" The Yemeni Embassy in Washington, an official account, [posted](https://x.com/YemenEmbassy_DC/status/2113649454423142588) that Amnesty International had called for the roads into Taiz to be opened. Open-source aggregators outside the region spread the news too. [An account called Osint613](https://x.com/Osint613/status/2117282561198002476) relayed the Reuters report, and [IWN](https://x.com/A7_Mirza/status/2116530475523088414), which uses the Houthis' own terminology, posted Houthi maps. The fact-checking site Misbar [rated as misleading](https://www.misbar.com/en/factcheck/2026/11/03/does-video-show-residents-looting-al-anad-air-base-amid-houthi-advances-lahj) a viral video that claimed to show residents looting al-Anad air base amid the advance. The footage was from January. We found no indexed posts from ordinary users inside Lahj or Aden.\n\n## What remains unknown\n\nThe exact line of control in al-Maqatirah and Tur al-Bahah is disputed between the Reuters sources and the government. No independent casualty count exists for the Lahj fighting. It is not known whether Saudi Arabia will escalate its air campaign, whether the United States will join it, or whether the Qatari-mediated talks on the wider Iran war will touch Yemen at all. The fate of the 70 or more UN staff in Houthi detention is also unknown.
